Blwyddyn Newydd Dda (Happy New Year)

I have decided to change the way I use my blog, for the past tw0 to nearly three years I have been only posting about finished pieces of art, exhibitions I have contributed in and commissions. I really want to open up my blog and start posting about works in progress, ideas, a monthly post of the studio (that I share with Morgan my husband) and other artists and makers who are local and international.

I'm super busy in the studio now, trying to finish off some Santes Dwynwen/St Valentine inspired jewellery for next months markets and following through with my ideas for new pieces of art work. Will blog a bit more when I have made some developments and progress.

I've promised to blog my side project which I co-run with my husband Morgan for nearly 6 months now, I hang my head low in shame! Once again I haven't written on the blog since October, so much has happened to me and to us. But it's January 2012, a new start so I begin with telling you about my making project. Since November we have been busy making mixed media collaged greeting cards, jewellery and badges to sell on our etsy shop named DyfalDonc.

Here is a little about us:

Dyfaldonc comes from the Welsh saying "dyfal donc a dyr y garreg", pronounced roughly "dove Al donk ah deer uh gah regg", direct translation means "a steady tapping breaks the stone".

DyfalDonc is a two team member gang, consisting of Morgan & Rebecca. Both are visual artists from North Wales but surprisingly met in the BIG smoke (London Town). Together they are Dad & Mam to their daughter Efa but to Etsy they’re co-runners of DyfalDonc their shop selling intriguing, unusal art, cards & jewellery.

"We love paper and glue, most of our images are from 50's, 60's, 70's books, old and/or discarded photographs of which we ensemble quirky collages or one off badge/pin sets. Our jewellery are made from wood, hand painted and collaged from photocopied anatomy and nature images. Hoping to create some one off pieces using original vintage/retro images in the future."

We have a facebook page too if you would like to join us, we run prize draws for goody bags everytime we reach a certain amount of fans. So join in.

Over the Christmas period we did 7 local fairs and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, it's a huge learning curve throwing yourself and the items you make out there for the public to scrutinise or love. It isn't like a gallery where you can hide from peoples comments. Also we have realised our products are very different to anything that is available around North Wales which I love but isn't commercial enough to put bread and butter on the table. It's hard to work around that line of creating pieces you enjoy and making money. But we're enjoying ourselves and I really enjoy the sense of community when we attend the markets. We start again next month in Caernarfon on the 4th Marchnad Neuadd y Farchnad and then the following Saturday in our home village of Bethesda in the local produce market. Fingers crossed it will go well.

Blue Commission

Created for Carys and Gary to celebrate their engagement last year, using the lyrics from a Super Furry Animals track and simplicity of the collage and the strong colour forget-me-not blue. I truly enjoyed working on this commission and wishing Carys and Gary all the best for their happy and joyful life ahead of them.

I took my exhibition down this morning with the help of my father-in-law Gareth Griffith, who also is a outstanding visual artist based here in North Wales. Walking into the space again I realised how far my practice has gone and developed over the past 5 years, it's had its highs and lows but for an artist who doesn't work on her practice 24/7 ( I truly wish I could) I feel accomplished. But I still need to grow and experiment and keep pushing myself however that is a tad difficult when you have no space to work!!

I have been back in North Wales for a month now living between my parents and the in-laws, as much as Efa is thoroughly enjoying herself I am feeling slightly lost. I am desperately in need of a small space to call my own! Tent in the garden it is then!

What's next? well I am now a member of bocs a group for experimental, contemporary visual artist and musicians based in the local area. It's very exciting times for them but as a newbie I hope I can be helpful and useful to them in their new project. Watch this space!

I have started to work as well again on Cary's commission, feeling very positive about the piece just need the space! After hours working on the kitchen table it is then!

I have a couple of things to apply for locally and I'm also working freelance as a gallery assistant for Oriel Mostyn an excellent contemporary gallery in Llandudno. David Nash on display next month so I am very looking forward for the private view!

I have also realised I have not bloged about my etsy shop I co-produce and run with my husband Morgan, who is also a visual artist. I will blog it soon.

Here's to a eventful end of Summer and beginning of Autumn.

'Serch' my first solo exhibition.

My first solo exhibition will be opening next week in my home town of Bangor, Gwynedd. I'm not sure how I feel about it, these past months have been so hectic, I hope it inspires people to get involved with the North Wales contemporary art scene. Time are indeed a changing but it's a slow process here. If we want the creative, artistic youth to stay in the area, then the area needs to provide projects, galleries, centres to make the contemporary new generation of artists want to stay.

MEMORY B(L)ANKS Exhibition

During the month of June I was part of a group exhibition in the North West of England at Axis Art Centre, Crewe. The project manager and curater was an artist called Emma Thackham www.emmathackham.com all together there was 26 artists reflecting on the impact of memory within contemporary issues of identity. Cultural, political and relational responses manifest through film, installation, sculpture, live art and sound. I created a new series of work called ''Cadw mi gei' within this I displayed two pieces of sculpture/wall installation, tiltled 'Nos da ffetws' and 'there is a thin line between love & hate'.

Apologies once again for not keeping up to date with my blogs. Sorry. It is now the middle of July, two exhibitions done, Efa's first birthday gone by as quickly as you can say pwwwsssy cat, left the big smoke behind and ventured back to the homeland for a pit stop and I am now a wife. So the last 2 1/2 months have been rather hectic to say the least.

However big things still to come, apart from getting our wedding photos back from the lovely Lisa (Lisa Jane Photography) I have my first little solo show at the end of the month in my hometown of Bangor, North Wales. Trying to sort myself out for it, as we only arrived back in Bangor two days ago and our belongings are stored in three various locations!! oh dear! and brain has frazzled from remembering where everything got packed!

Also hoping on the next post to upload some of the sculpture I created in May for the MemoryBLANKS exhibition in Axis Art Centre Crewe but my old laptop is starting to play up. Something I really don't need right now with trying to apply for art jobs and opportunities. Ce la vie, life goes on and upwards and onwards. Here is the next chapter in my life, let's hope it's a good one.

April Fools into Bank Holiday May

Time just seems to be flying past, while I seem to be creating more deadlines for myself! Same old story not enough hours in a day....

Right where do I start, the post below shows a piece of work I created for a Studio/Gallery space in Cardiff called studiob. It was an opportunity for me to be productive and also to exhibit to a different audience, I was even exposed on their website as well. From the photos it looked like a great weekend, they had open studios and a postcard exhibition open to all artists (where my little postcard was on display).

Since then I have been multi-tasking on various projects, created another piece of work for a charity auction in my home-town, started sketches for the commission and finally started to pencil work the composition on the piece. Today I started working on my sculpture for a exhibition in June and I have two exhibitions in July, one in London and the other my first solo exhibition will be in my home-town. (Further info on the exhibitions to follow in the future) So I'm keeping myself busy and trying to keep to deadlines as much as I can (still trying to balance being an artist, mother and having a part-time job)

Also with fingers and toes crossed Morgan and I should have our etsy shop up and running very soon. We will be selling art originals and prints, stationary and accessories. Will post more details as it gets closer to the official opening.

Above is a new piece of work I created for a student artist named Sophia Moseley in her last year at Goldsmith's. We exhibited together in January at Showcase London and she later e-mailed me asking me whether I would participate in her mail art project. She sends you a blank stamped postcard, you cover it with your art and just post it back! It would be interesting to see what she receives in the end!

Plus I am doodling and researching and scribbling ideas down in my little sketchbook at the moment. I have been asked to create a commission, so I am a busy bee! Will keep you posted with my ideas and development over the next months. But very exciting times!!

I have been busy bee with applying for exhibs and comps, so keep your fingers crossed for me! I have also been given my first commission with the work I nicked name funnywomen. It was great to be approached to take on this project, I have allready started doodling ideas which I may use for other pieces and I'm also exciting to create 2D work again. Allthough my aim is now to start working on creating sculpture/3D work I think I will be moving it into April, I have a lot of things buzzing around my skull at the moment and frankly I am glad that 2011 has made me get up and go.

Showcase London

The idea sounded great but the actual event wasn't quite my cup of tea, feeling completely out of my comfort zone I stood next to my panels (after a lot of persuading from friends and bf). It was more like hovered around the area than standing next to it like a lost lamp post!! However it did feel good seeing my work together mixing different pieces next to each other from my 2D khadi papers to colourfully painted sieves to my labels. It was also great to see the other artists on display, to view such a collectic bunch of creatives all bearing their arty souls. All though I seemed to be the only one suffering from networking stage fright!!! I'm glad I did it and Showcase London http://www.showcase-london.com/ (the organisers) seem to have everything in control through out the event, so thanks guys. I would recommend it, even if you only do it once, the venue RichMix http://www.richmix.org.uk/ is art/culture centre and was a great space and has some really interesting events going on. Check it out.

Happy New Year!! My first blog of 2011 and I promise to try a bit harder this year, lets see if I can at least write a blog every month!!

So far on the art front I have been messing, editing and pondering over my 'depression' piece, no longer as large as originally planned but even now as I write this I'm still not happy with it. Perhaps I should look at the labels individually as a series and not assembled in a group. After all, depression does isolate you. Will carry on pondering!!

The last blog below, is a piece of work I created just before Christmas. I was desperate to use some vibrant colours and layering, it felt good to be creating a more positive piece on that invisible strength and love we have between friends. It is a present for my good old friend but I'm not quite finished with it yet. I'm hoping to carry on working in this playful way with colour and text and layers. I've just bought more labels in assorted sizes and I'm getting enthusiastic again at getting creative I just need the time!! Where does the time go??!!

I have also been looking for exhibitions to apply for and competitions to try, busy busy! I have these crazy spurts every now and then and I kick myself in my backside to get on with it. There's a dead line in a week and a half on the subject 'local' and another Eisteddfod entry in Feb, plus I'm meaning to send proposals to small Welsh galleries and some London drinking haunts and independent galleries. To be honest I've been thinking for a long time now on my career, going back to the old job at the end of the month, maternity leave has come to an end. Wish I was going back to a job I really enjoyed though!!! Catch 22!!

I do believe I have rambled on quite enough, lets hope the next time I blog I will have a new piece of work to show and you never know a exhib!! One can only wish......

New flat, new art space and new work started. Finally out of the old flat that I loved into the new basement flat with just the three of us, two artists and a baby. There are conversations flying in the air about getting a cat, but it's still a handful looking after Efa and trying to get on with my art so I may ponder on that for a while longer. New art space is actually the corridor but where there is a wall and a desk, it magically changes into a art space for me.

Just before the move I started working on a new piece, using labels again as the canvas and the same mixed media, subconsciousness method of momentum and emotional topic. Roughly keeping the idea of hanging it (nailing each one individually on the wall) a meter by a meter, so around 65 labels in a big square shape. I'm hoping to crack on with it this week, the subject matter is depression in a factual and emotional response. I've added some detailed images of a few I've created.

It felt quite strange packing up the old art space, it made me analyse and ponder on how much work I've done over the year, the quality of it, the new materials I've used and also it makes you look back on your previous work and makes you question whether you should carry on developing it and question why haven't you!! All I know is I need to carry on making.........

I wish I had another arm or maybe two more! One would be drawing and doodling ideas, another would be hammering nails into walls to install art, another would be creating stunningly scrumptious food for my tum and the last one would be moping up baby puke and poo!! Not very attractive the last one! Perhaps I should have a fifth arm with a glass of vino in it. Either way what I’m trying to say is I’m a balancing act, between being a visual artist, being myself, being a lover and a mother to a 4 month baby!!

Between the giggles and the tantrums my mind is ticking away with ideas and creations that finally I have the opportunity to produce. In April next year I’m showcasing a cross-section of my work and a couple of new pieces in a contemporary gallery in Caernarfon, North Wales. It’s a basement gallery and it may not be very large however the driven force it has for the young contemporary local emerging artists is outstanding. There isn’t very much support for them therefore it’s refreshing to see an art space going against the norm and showcasing challenging and enlightening art. I was recently there just last month, assisting with hanging and curate an exhibition of two brothers, Ioan and Morgan Griffith. Their exhibition ‘Looking at faces/ Edrych ar wynebau’ is still on at Oriel Dafydd Hardy (no relation to me!) till the 30^th of September more info visit http://www.bocs.org.uk/ and to have a look at more of Morgan’s work go to www.sonomano.blogspot.com

I’ve started to scribble ideas, developing and working on old ones and collect materials for a sculpture/installation I want to create for next year. Using previous subject matter for a series of works inspired by the painting created by the Italian renaissance artist Giovanni Battista Moroni (1520/4 – 1579). His painting ‘The Vestal Virgin Tuccia’ (about 1555) has influenced me to create new pieces of work in 3D form, working in a mix media approach contradicting the intention of the painting. Will be interesting to see how it pans out.

One more thing, if you fancy doing something different or visiting a new area of London within the next two weeks visit Deptford. Right now the Deptford X Art Festival is on till the 3^rd of October, for more info go to www.deptfordx.org I will be volunteering a couple of days with them and can’t wait to see the art on display.

Gwyl Arall (another) Festival

Celf Gwyl Arall Art was a weekend art exhibition coinciding with the festival over the weekend of 23-25th of July. The exhibition took over a empty two floor shop on Bangor road in Caernarfon, N.Wales and displayed local established and emerging Welsh artists. My artwork, 100,000 was chosen and there was tv coverage of the exhibition opening which my piece got a 2 second show. Unfortunatly I wasn't able to go up but it felt good to be showing my artwork in my local area I grew up, plus my family and extended family went to support. Hopefully there will be images but for now I have stills from the tv programme.

Title: tictoc 2010

Materials: mixed media on khadi paper

'tictoc' originated from a quick angry emotional sketch I made while being 6 months pregnant. I then forgot about it until I started a new sketchbook and I scribbled it on to the pages. It wasn't until I was 5 days overdue I decided to create something using the sketch as the foundation and attempt to reconcile with the feelings I felt at that time in February and mix it with the emotions that were running through me while being overdue. Unfortunately I didn't get to finish it before my baby girl arrived but carried on afterwards still tuning into the feelings and emotions I felt before. The anticipation, the lack of control, the unknown, strange and weird.

These drawings/watercolour paintings are the beginnings of a on-going project I wish to work on and produce through -out the year. Refering back to mediums I used at the very beginning of developing my practice (funnywomen) I'm using these methods again, the loose vibrant watercolours with linear black lines and text. These drawings will be very personal to me, an autobiographical expression of me dealing with loosing my Nain (Grandma) who past away this year in February.

This piece of artwork/sculpture/installation is a new development in my practice. I have been playing with using the idea of labels for two years but this piece is the first finished and exhibited. I have had some mixed response, non-negative which is good but I am hoping to continue in experimenting with this medium and develope my ideas further. Title of the piece was 100,000 and the medium was mixed media (labels, paint, ink and collage).

Presenting REPEAT & REPRISE, an ecletic showcase of artwork including painting, illustration, photography, print, mixed media and sculpture, inspired by the subject of repetition. This can be taken as an acknowledgment of the endless series of repeated and recurring patterns of behaviour and events that we all consciously and subconsciously observe and involve ourselves in each day.

All of the participating artists presently work as daytime staff at the National Gallery in London. This is their second independent exhibition, following on from their well-received first show 'In A State Of Flux' in Whitechapel last July (which was curated by Rebecca F. Hardy).

It's been far too long, 4 months to exact!!

I haven't written my blog in such a long time, I do have a very good reason aswell! I'm having a baby, a little girl, her due date is May the 6th 2010. Therefore everything kinda went on hold, the realisation of responsability overwhelmed me and I had to sort my life out!

But here we are, the last day of the year and I finally feel like life is slowly going back to normal, allthough I don't quite know what normal is but I feel that the old arty determined fighting Becky is back. Plus I have so much work to do, I have a deadline on the 25th of January, which gives me just over 3 weeks to finish the piece of work I'm creating for a group exhibition in early Febuary 2010. I will post more details and my progress in the next couple of weeks. But it feels good to be driving and pushing myself again in my creativity.

I no longer work in my bedroom, I have a small studio space in the lounge of my flat which I still need to adjust to!! But just happy to have the space to work. The idea of having a independent studio now doesn't seem very realistic but in the future who knows!

Will blog soon with images of work I have been experimenting with and creating over the past 4 months but to be honest there isn't much!! Hopefully 2010 will give me a spurt of creativity and opportunities.

Embracing the new.........

Hello....

It's just gone one in the morning and I can't sleep!! My head keeps whirling around with thoughts and ideas!! On the art front all is quite ;-( no exhibs coming up unfortunatly but I will keep trying and plodding along as always. Created some new work while I was away in Bala at the beginning of the month, it started as a automatic drawing outside in the Welsh landscape (while I waited for my sister and co to wake up from their hangovers!! hehe!) I then finished it back in London but still attempting to keep the automatic mode and feelings I felt while I was in Wales. In the bottom left corner is some wool I found in the field while I was in Bala that I later added on.

I've also started my moving image project, for some time I've wanted to work in film again in a short animation. My aim at the moment is unclear n which path I will take or how it will develope however I am quite excited. Whatch this space!!! I've finally started work on my self-portrait or autobiography piece, it isn't a direct self-portrait but that is also something else I would like to develop in the future.....urgh!! too many ideas and not enough time!!

On the career front..........no show! (I am currently looking for a new job, allthough all my efforts are squandered at the moment....I am hopefull in the future someone will give me a chance!!) onwards & upwards as a good friend said lately.

In a State of Flux Exhibition 2nd-23rd July

Hi to all,

Now life is back to normal, and how sad it is to be so. I had a amazing time planning and organising the show (not to sound too gooey and sickly sweet but) I had such a great laugh and emotional roller coaster putting it all on. Some fantastic pieces of artwork and truly intriguing work was on display. I think my favourite moments were when the work started to come into the gallery, when we finally got started with the curating and the last bit of artwork was hung! Plus singing motown tunes while scrubing the floor, eating tasty pizzas from the kewl pub down the road 'Indo' and shouting "oi, oi, oi, OI!!" to get everyones attention for my ickle opening speech!! Was very scary, atleast over hundred people came to the opening night!! Thank you so much for everyone that helped, participated and supported us......muchas gracias x

I would personally like to invite you to our first group exhibition, a diverse exhibition of contrasting and thought-provoking art from emmerging and established artists.

During the month of July we will have our work on display in an exhibition in a new space called SOUP gallery on Whitechapel rd. Hi,

I am utterly useless so far with my bloggs (I humbly apolagise). It has been a crazy and fullfilling 4 weeks and a bit. I've had my artwork on display in a ickle exhibition 'Co-Motion' which coincided with the CIFD "London's Global Mixtape!" 'No Passport Necessary' festival, which fell over the first bank holiday of May. It was on display at Camden's Roundhouse for a week with other fellow arty people, the brief was to create work expressing a more personal experience, to explore concepts like global party, journeys, identity, culture clash, city transit and of course, London. I will add an image once I have a decent photo of it (bare with me!!) I created the work specifically for the show, plus I got into the festival for free (+ 4 mates) danced like a crazy woman to Zoe Appleseed and Size Nine, fun fun had by all ;-)

Just come back from Spain aswell, went to Barcelona and Madrid 3days in each city (though really I should had done 5 in each because there is so much to see and do) had an absaloute amazing time there with my fellow arty mate Mike. Lots of art, lots of walking, lots of beer, lots of dancing and lots of sunshine....scorchio! Check out Time Out's article on Barcelona, which is out now! and then go go go go!!

TAKE NOTE: I am organising a exhibition at the moment, a fusion of diverse and thought provoking art from up and coming artists, emerging and established. Therefore, whatch this space!! for I will be letting you know the goss and the info very soon. It's all very exciting and scary at the moment but I can't wait to get stuck in!!!!
